Happy Teachers Day.

Akshat Pande
Dr. Virendra Swarup Public School Cantt. Branch
1998 batch.

Today on the teacher’s day, I am reminded of my school. It has been unbelievably long 10 years since I passed out from the school. Yet some teachers have left their mark on me as a person. Teacher student relation is to me a strange relation. As a student, you expect everything from the teacher. He/she is always right and is responsible for doing it right. Let’s explore this relationship today. From a teacher’s point of view, well, he/she is doing his/her job so there is pretty much limited scope of having any kind of attachment. But still somehow, whenever an old student meets or calls a teacher after a long time (in my case, I emailed Sir Menon after 12 years), he/she would remember. Isn’t that amazing?

Starting from the pauranic guru-shishya parampara to the present Taare Zameen Par’s Akash, the relationship of a teacher student has seen enormous changes. Whereas in the historic times till quite recently, the place of a teacher was an unquestionable, ever respected dais of wisdom, truth and knowledge, today it has become much more accountable and approachable. The state sponsored schools and colleges have brought this profession at the equal footing to any babu-dominated sarkari daftar where red tapism, strikes for pay-hikes, corruption and sexual harassment is a common phenomenon. However, the respect for the profession in the eyes of the students and the society in general is still there? Or is it? Well hard to put a tag.

The schools have also undergone a sea change. From seats of knowledge, they have transformed into 3 or 4 star hotels with every facility under the sun that you can imagine. Air conditioned class rooms, modern gadgetry, plush buildings and what not. Schools are the pupil’s favorite hang out places these days. Somehow, I don’t buy the idea of making it extremely comfortable for the students as the life outside the schools is not and if they can be given a little taste of that blood-sucking real world, won’t they be better persons? Food for thought.

The relation between a teacher and student has been greatly affected due to western education system being introduced and the way it is seen there. The teachings are more discussion based. A teacher is a friendly guide rather than an instructor. We have loaded these concepts in our education systems as it sounds very nice and doable. However, I see a conflict. It is in our genes to see a teacher as someone godly. And then when we, and by we I mean the students, are told that you can call your teacher by his/her name, you can discuss and argue with them, we are confused. Even teachers are confused.

Anyways, I guess most of us are lucky to have excellent teachers and I thank all of my teachers as what I am today is because of them to a great extent. I will try to list as many teachers as possible and thank them with all my heart.
